- Advocacy on behalf of consumers against corporate wrongdoing.
- Increasing the amount of information available to consumers as purchasers in the marketplace.
- Ensuring a cost-effective (and sustainable) energy future.
- Protecting and expanding the public domain.
- Encouraging the development and adoption of open-source technology (ie. educational video and audio regarding the use of various open source software projects, such as Firefox, OpenOffice, Drupal, etc.)
- Educating consumers, artists, and attorneys on copyright/IP laws.
- Protecting fair use rights from corporate encroachment (scare tactics against lawful use).
- Bridging the digital divide.
- Encouraging the use of Web 2.0 communities, blogging, and podcasting by groups traditionally uninvolved.
The New Media Rights Free Public Media Studio

New Media Rights offers free filmmaking equipment (cameras, lighting, and audio) to artists in the greater San Diego region. Right now, the studio includes of a high-end video camera (Canon XL2), shotgun and lavalier microphones, a green screen, professional light kit, tripod, a dual-monitor G5 apple workstation, Final Cut Studio (including Motion, Soundtrack, and LiveType), as well as open-source programs for image editing, and video and audio capturing. Purchases of new equipment are made upon request. If you would like to see us buy a new piece of equipment, contact us. Or apply to use the equipment.
In addition to the equipment, the NMR Studio provides creators with another resource: knowledge. We have someone in house to provide assistance on how to best use the equipment and plan your shoot as well as lawyers who can provide legal and business advice to creators like you.
Who can use the NMR Studio?
NMR is looking for innovative projects that are outside the realm of mainstream studio-produced content. Preference will be given to projects that: contribute to the public domain by committing to creative commons or other versions of open source licensing that permit future creators to reasonably build upon existing creative works , make use of new media distribution channels, and are within NMR's current interests. The NMR Studio is available primarily for individuals and non-profit organizations, but for-profit businesses with projects that meet the stated criteria can apply to use the studio as well.
If you have a great idea, but you don't meet all the requirements, don't worry about it. Send us a form anyway! The last thing we want is to see a great idea lost for all of eternity just because you didn't have a place to make it happen!
What can I use the studio for?
Below is a list of possible NMR Studio projects to help you brainstorm. We are hoping you will propose a project that is not on the list, or that we have never even thought of!
- short-length and full-length documentary and non-fiction video
- short-length and full-length fictional video (drama, comedy, action, mockumentary, etc.)
- experimental/avant-garde video
- video editing and titling
- video mash-ups (found footage, parody, etc.)
- still photography
- digital art
- flash video
- audio and video podcasts and blogging
- Creating webcasts (particularly informative or educational)

New Media Rights Declaration of a Grassroots Revolution

New Media Rights was born out of the crossroads we face as a culture. Mass media still largely controls production and distribution culture, making decisions about what is and isn't important information. Despite this, the decreased costs of creating and distributing art, entertainment, and political speech have, for the first time, created an atmosphere where individuals can now communicate on the same level as the mass media.
New Media Rights' mission is to support those individuals creating culture who do not have access to the legal services and capital that traditional media outlets have access to.
It is an exciting time because every day we are seeing new ways that the creativity of individuals has been improving people lives. Our goal is to play a part encouraging this power to produce, communicate, and disseminate culture directly to keep it free from gatekeepers.
This revolution relies on individuals understanding and embracing their new abilities and the technologies that enable these cultural changes. At the same time, entrenched interests, particularly traditional mass media such as the recording industry, movie industry, traditional broadcasters, and large telecommunications companies, have chosen to treat the grassroots content revolution as a threat, rather than a complementary piece of a modern democracy and culture. Individuals must understand their rights and responsibilities in this new world.
Our mission is to promote and facilitate the use of new grassroots content distribution technology and provide a community for education on the technology and laws, particularly intellectual property laws (Copyright and Trademark in particular) surrounding grassroots content use and creation. Our philosophy is that there is a public benefit to wider involvement in a creative world in which creators are more closely connected to users in a non-hierarchical creative community. New Media Rights' goal is to assist in fostering a strong, non-hierarchical creative community for the new media user/creator by providing a community where the issues of podcasting, blogging, social media, remixing, mash-ups, wikis, and more can be openly discussed. Users and creators (often one in the same) of content can come here to find assistance, share their knowledge of new media and interesting tools they find, as well as engage in grassroots activism.
