"The Shape of News to come"

According to the Miami Herald,  "The Knight Foundation,a Miami-based charity is underwriting an ambitious effort to shape journalism in the digital age, though a five-year, $25 million dollar initiative called the Knight News Challenge." Basically, the Foundation is searching for the next “Newscast”, or the “Newspaper of the future”. Money is being doled out to people who come up with new ideas that work. I have an idea by way of San Diego’s, New Rights Media. We want to begin a dialogue with everyday people to find out how to best serve the community. For instance in Bakersfield California, anyone can publish his or her own newspaper. In San Francisco, freelance journalists use a website to solicit your story ideas, and donations to do their reporting on those topics submitted. In Chicago, a team of computer programmers links databases that allow you to find out whether someone was mugged on your street, and whether the corner pizza joint has mice. According to the pundits, the local news models in use are doomed to fade away. Already local news has seen huge audience, and reader erosion. That has cost journalists their jobs, and tightened TV, Radio, and Newspaper budgets all over town. A new digital news channel will launch by the end of the month promising local news on the web. We can come up with more than that. In the coming days I will explore new formats, new business models, and distribution channels for that content. I welcome your ideas however wild they may be. Nothing is off limits in this experiment. because as we have seen in today’s market news providers are desperate or answers. for more information go to "The Miami Herald article"
