Thanks you for everyone who showed up to the event! A write-up of what happened at the film screening will soon be up, so look out for that.

About the film:

For many activists around the world new media has become an incredible tool to increase participation, bridge communities, disseminate messages and creating action using information. 10 Tactics shows the interviews of human rights activists who have used new media tools and strategies to build actions for their causes and create attention around their causes. These tactics go far beyond just explaining why the tactics are important but rather how they are successfully implemented at critical times where people had to recieve the information to stop human right violations from happening.

Ten Tactics focuses on 10 different ways you can spread you message in a clear way:

When individuals and groups receive information that they want to present to the public it is critical in that we offer that information through online tools, because so much of the population is on the internet. Sometimes we feel as if learning new tech tools is difficult but here are some inspirational examples of how a bit of creativity and organizing led to great interactive resources for local communities:

  • Citizen Journalists in India used Digital video cameras, editing software, YouTube, widescreen projectors, VCD/DVDs for video screenings in villages and to community networks. In turn after a community-made video on land rights in Gujarat, India, was screened in 25 nearby villages, 700 people rallied and filed complaints with the local government to have land fairly distributed to them.
  •  A team of advocates and technologists collaborated on a complex 3D map to display the damage to over 2000 villages; show the location of 2.5 million internally displaced persons and refugees; and provide open access to numerous photos, videos, and testimonies from Darfur. http://hub.witness.org/en/blog/screening-10-tactics-turning-information-action http://www.informationactivism.org/en/tactic7video
  • After FarmSubsidy.org began compiling information on farm subsidy funds from Swedish government sources, it had so much data it was difficult to make sense of it. To understand this data and present it in a powerful way, it plotted farm subsidy payments on a Google Map so that people could zoom in to see what money went where to carry out their own investigations and draw their own conclusions.
  • Tunisian activists who tracked images of the Presidential plane at different international airports to prove it was being used for personal travel.
  • The feminist activists from the Women and Memory Forum in Egypt who are rewriting traditional Arabic fairytales and folklore to challenge prevalent representations of women in popular culture.
  • The Slovakian activists from the Fair Play Alliance that created an online database to track how the government spends its money and find conflicts of interests between officials and the contracts awarded.
